Match Report
FC United eased away lingering relegation concerns by recording their second away victory of the week on Saturday afternoon, beating Alfreton Town 1-0 with George Thomson scoring the all important goal.

After winning 2-1 at league leaders Solihull Moors on Tuesday night, the Reds were in fine fettle again, this time at ‎North Street where Thomson struck a 25th minute winner.

The victory brings FC United’s total up to 42 points for the season and they remain in 14th position in the Vanarama National League North.

Whilst Karl Marginson’s side are not completely safe from relegation yet, three wins, one draw and one narrow 2-1 defeat in the last five matches makes for good reading and is certainly much better than the dismal return of five straight defeats in February. ‎

The first half opened up with both teams looking to attack. As with the midweek game, there was action straight from the kick-off with Alfreton skipper Dan Bradley putting in a dangerous cross inside 30 seconds which centre-back Luke Ashworth cleared.

FC United were looking strong but not creating many chances. In fact, neither team could could muster a clear chance on goal in the opening exchanges, the home side testing Dave Carnell with a couple of long shots but there was no real danger.

On 25 minutes, FC United had their first shot on target, which resulted in what turned out to be the winning goal. A good passage of play down the left involving Jerome Wright, Scott Kay and Chris Chantler saw the latter cross the ball to Thomson, who took a touch and finished superbly past Matt Duke.

The game continued to be bright, the home side looking to get on the front foot, the Reds - playing in white - looking solid at the back and attacking with pace. Dale Johnson was again looking bright with some great touches and hold up play.

The second half was much the same but FC United should have doubled the lead just before the hour mark when a good piece of close play saw Thomson in the box. His shot flew wide of the post and he will be disappointed not to have hit the target.

The busy Sam Sheridan was controlling the game from the middle of the park, he saw a very dangerous cross cleared at the far post as the visitors looked to increase their lead.

Alfreton came very close to levelling things up with nine minutes left on the clock as Sam Jones managed to fire a shot past Carnell that looked destined to be the equaliser. However, Dale Tonge had other ideas as he raced back and acrobatically cleared the ball off the line. This gave FC the inspiration to see out the remainder of the game with little danger.

The performance was a great continuation of the game against Solihull with good attacking play and solid defending. The result sets up the busy Easter period nicely.

Website man of the match - Sam Sheridan. Ran the game from the middle of the pitch. Tireless going forward, playing in players around him and solid when required to defend. A dominant midfield performance.
