Match Report

FC United crashed out of the FA Cup at home to Lancaster City on Saturday afternoon as a Billy Akrigg goal in the 85th minute settled the second qualifying round tie 1-0.

It was a great opportunity for the Reds to progress against a team from the league below, but from kick off Lancaster began the first ten minutes as if they were the home team, taking the game to United who looked a little slow to start with.

United did get into the swing of things, with good passing and possesion play seeing them dictate the games tempo, but it was all a bit slow and laid back. Greg Daniels did well on the right hand side of the box to cross for Wolfenden, but Wolfie could’t get the ball out of his feet and his effort was easily cleared away.

Wolfenden again had a great chance to open the scoring as he got his foot to a ball at the near post but Lancaster ’keeper Michal Hale seemed to unknowingly get a han to it and push the ball away.

United looked to have got the first of the game when a Liam Brownhill free kick hit the side netting, with those in the stand on the far side of the pitch thinking the effort had nestled into the goal.

Within ten minutes of the start of the second half Margy hanged the front line replacing Greaves and Daniels with Norton and Walwyn, with the substitutes causing a few problems for the opposition defence.

Walwyn had two of the best oportunities of the game firstly beating Hale before seeing his effort hit the woodwork and go out for a corner, and then later after a scramble from the corner his shot from just outside the box seemed destined for the back of the net but hit his strike partner Norton in the six yard box to deny United the goal they deserved.

It was wave after wave of attack from United with Welsh and then Wright (who had come off the bench to replace Welsh) both forcing good reaction saves from Hale, but the Lancaster stopper wouldn’t be beaten no matter how hard United tried.

As United turned the screw looking for the goal which would see them through to the third qualifying round Lancaster showed signs that they could be dangerous on the counter attack and United were hit with the ultimate sucker punch when Billy Akrigg netted five minutes from time sealing victory for the Dolly Blues.

It was a bitter blow for United who had in all honesty been the better of the two teams and now return to league action against Whitby next Saturday looking to carry on with the assault towards the top of the league.

Man of the match: Matthew Wolfenden - looked the most likely to make something happen with two great chances in the first half.
