FC United are through to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup after beating Prescot Cables 4-1 at Bower Fold on Sunday afternoon thanks to a brace by Tom Greaves and one each from Chris Lynch and Matt Walwyn.
Greaves bagged two first half goals to put United in the driving seat, Lynch made sure of victory four minutes into the second half and substitute Walwyn put the icing on the cake with the fourth before the visitors gained a late consolation through Jon Bathurst.
FC probably should have taken the lead on nine minutes when debutant Andy Welsh crossed to Greg Daniels but he blasted his shot over the bar.
Welsh was also involved a few minutes later when he crossed from the right but Scott Cheetham saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Adam Reid.
On the quarter hour, Matthew Wolfenden was played in. He rounded Reid but saw the chance cleared.
There were a couple of close moments in the FC defence especially when a mistake from Lynch saw Rob Doran into the box but Dave Carnell saved well. At the other end, Daniels’ rasping shot rattled the crossbar.
With the amount of possession being enjoyed, it seemed to be only a matter of time before FC United would take the lead. It happened just after the half hour mark when Greaves was fed the ball on the edge of the box and his drive went through Reid and into the net.
Eight minutes later, the lead was doubled when a cross from the right was headed back into the six yard box where Greaves nodded into the net.
As the half time interval drew close, Welsh had a couple of chances but found Reid equal to both of them.
The game was ended as a contest inside five minutes of the restart when a corner was headed home by Lynch.
From this point, the game went into a lull though Cables did almost pull a goal back when Joe Evans forced Carnell to tip the ball over the bar.
With two minutes to go, substitute Walwyn side-footed past Reid to make the score 4-0 and there was time for Prescot to score the goal of the game when Bathurst found himself 25 yards from goal. He noticed Carnell off his line and managed to chip the ball into the far corner of the net.
Website man of the match - Callum Byrne. Quietly went about his job, playing the ball from midfield and on occasion playing killer balls out wide.
