Match Report
On an evening of cup football for FC United the reserves travelled the short distance up the A57 to Abbey Hey to take on Hyde in the Lancashire League Cup. The result was a 3-2 defeat with goals from Frank van Gils and Michael Brewster.

On this occasion it was our hosts that were quickest out of the blocks, taking the lead after just three minutes, a corner was not cleared and a cross back into the box offered a simple tap in. This did spur the lads into action and two minutes later, a short corner routine by John Pritchard and Frank van Gils offered Dean Hope a chance to shoot but his effort was blocked.

An equaliser wasn’t long in coming though, after 13 minutes another corner found its way to the far post where van Gils was able to squeeze it home. Then for much of the first half FC dominated possession with debutante Jack Tinning coming to the fore providing a chance for Michael Brewster and having a couple of shots himself. The best being in the 27th minute when FC fan and former youth team player Josh Broadbent was at full stretch to turn over for a corner.

For all the United pressure, it was Hyde that scored next, in the 31st minute a lapse in the FC defending allowed George West to run clear and fire past Taylor to make it 2-1. Hyde could have added to that lead three minutes later. FC were attacking as a Pritchard free kick went out for a corner but the home side cleared and broke quickly to the other end of the pitch. This time Taylor was able to spare the blushes of his colleagues by blocking the resulting shot. For the rest of the half the visitors dominated, Pritchard featuring prominently but without truly testing Broadbent.

In the second half FC United stepped up a gear and could have equalised in the opening minute as Tunde Owolabi created a chance for himself but was unable to get the ball past Broadbent. Hyde were forced to play on the break, but managed to do so to some effect with three good chances in the next five minutes. Rob Swallow and Ryan Masterson, twice, were off target when they should have scored.

The next ten minutes were all FC United as Pritchard had a shot blocked, a dangerous van Gils run cutting in from the left found Ryan Saxon who shot wide and Saxon was the provider of a cross that found Owolabi; his header was saved by Broadbent.

Hyde made it 3-1 after an hour when the referee played an advantage as Masterson was challenged by van Gils broke clear and crossed for George West to fire home. The referee then going back to caution Frank.

Michael Brewster provided reward for the FC United pressure on 75 minutes when he fired a 25 yard free kick over the head of Broadbent and in to the net and three minutes later a foul on Nick Truelove saw FC awarded a penalty. Owolabi fired low to the keepers left but sufficiently close to Broadbent for him to save the effort.

FC never stopped pressing for an equaliser that would have taken play to a penalty shoot-out; Chris Taylor venturing forward for two late corners but without success. The defence of the trophy won so spectacularly at Thackley in May ended at the first hurdle.

A correspondents man of the match award goes to Josh Broadbent in recognition of his efforts to keep FC United at bay but also in honour of the turn-out from the High Peak branch in the support of one of their own whilst hoping he would have a nightmare.
