Match Report

FC United drew 1-1 at Trafford on Bank Holiday Monday with James Knowles getting his first goal for the Reds.

Jerome Wright had an early penalty saved but Knowles did edge Karl Marginson’s side ahead after 30 minute. However, Trafford scored a penalty of their own to earn a share of the spoils.

With three draws in the first three games of the season, United came out quickly looking to build on their unbeaten start and within a minute they had a great opportunity to open the scoring after a rash challenge in the box saw the Reds awarded a penalty.

Wright steped up but saw his effort saved by Trafford ’keeper Tom Read as United missed the early opportunity.

That didn’t get the Reds down though as they were the team on the front foot for most of the first half with Nelson Mota and Astley Mulholland looking the most dangerous coming forward.

On the half hour mark, the Reds did take the lead as Knowles got his head to a corner, netting his first goal for the club and give United a lead that they had seemingly deserved.

With the three previous draws in mind, United went looking for the two goal cushion and could have had it just before the break when Mike Norton - who was making his 200th appearence for the club - hit the post from the corner.

A good first half was almost completed when United seemingly hit self-destruct once more and gave away a penalty just seconds before the break, which was converted by Shelton Payne to send the teams into the break all square.

The second half carried on much the same with United making most of the play and looking to take the lead with Norton getting his head to a Mota cross early in the half.

United kept the pressure up with Callum Byrne taking over the midfield and Tom Greaves being introduced to the action as a signal of intent.

Despite this, Trafford broke a ouple of times, testing Carnell in the United goal, but in truth a scrappy game really struggled to get going with so many breaks in the play.

United couldn’t turn possesion into a goal and with the draw they still stand undefeated after four games, but a return of four points from four games seems like little reward and United now entertain Ramsbottom at Bower Fold on Saturday looking to get the first win on the board.

Report by Craig Phillips

Man of the match: Callum Byrne - controlled the game in the middle of the park for United but the possesion could not be turned into the winning goal.
