Match Report

FC United’s unbeaten start to the season continued with a 0-0 draw at Marine but the Reds will be disappointed to have not come away with a victory after dominating the game.

Short sleeves were the order of the day for the trip to Merseyside, a glorious September afternoon was putting everyone in an optimistic mood as surely the mighty Reds would continue their unbeaten run in style.

That optimism seemed well founded early on as FC handled a couple of minutes of early Marine pressure and then went on the attack. Callum Byrne clipped a shot just over the cross bar after four minutes and then found himself with a glorious opportunity two minutes later as the ball came to him just inside the Marine box. However, under very little pressure he put his shot past the post when, in truth, he should have hit the target.

At the other end, Marine’s Andy Fowler was making sure it was not a totally one sided affair and he should have probably given the home side the lead after eight minutes but also could not convert his chance.

After 10 minutes the game, like the temperature, was warming up nicely. FC looked dangerous through Liam Brownhill on the right and Jerome Wright on the left as Marine struggled to cope with the attacking mentality of FC.

It was Brownhill who raced down the right for the second time in as many minutes to drill in a cross which fell to Tom Greaves who was unmarked 10 yards out, unfortunately the Marine defence closed to block his shot.

By the time FC had had a penalty shout turned down for what looked like a foul on Greaves, Wright had hit a whistling long range effort just over and Matthew Wolfenden had shot wide after a scramble in the box FC were well in control and it looked as though it would be a matter of time before the crucial goal came.

Marine were being pinned back for the most part, however the dangerous Fowler remained a thorn in the FC side and should again have broken the deadlock after 25 minutes when, following a corner, he pulled his shot wide when it looked easier to score.

All to play for then as both sides looked to get a goal before the break. Byrne again went close with a header and Greaves shot wide before perhaps the best chance of the game fell to Michael Norton on the stroke of half time.

Luke Ashworth put over an excellent corner which arched perfectly onto the sun drenched head of the unmarked Norton who powered a fine header straight over the bar and into the Marine faithful behind the goal.

The start of the second half saw further chances for both sides, the pick of which was Norton heading straight at the keeper five minutes in and another Wright piledriver tipped acrobatically over the top.

When Greg Daniels replaced Callum Byrne after an hour, FC were still the side that looked more likely to make a breakthrough but the pace had slowed considerably compared to a frenetic first half.

Daniels was immediately in the action and from a position on the right he breezed past a couple of Marine defenders to make space for a shot on the edge of the box.

Unfortunately, he could only hit his left footed effort straight down Matthew Coopers’ throat in the Marine goal. Daniels definitely looked the most likely to make something happen and he managed to get himself to the byline a couple of times but unfortunately both his crosses were scrambled away.

Another substitute went closest before the game petered out into a stalemate when Connor Bower was a whisker away from glancing a header into the net as he raced in front of the oncoming keeper from a pass from Tommy Greaves. He was millimetres away from giving FC a deserved 1-0 lead and the chance summed up Uniteds’ day.

Marine made a fist of it for the last 15 minutes but apart from a free-kick into the wall from 20 yards out and a fine save from Dave Carnell from a long range effort, the game had lost its earlier intensity. Marine will be happier with the result and FC will be disappointed that they created enough chances to win two games and only came back up the M62 with a point.

Website man of the match: Liam Brownhill - solid at the back, dangerous going forward.
