Match Report

FC United of Manchester moved four points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division with 12 games to go after a 3-1 win over Kings Lynn at the Tameside Stadium on Saturday afternoon in front of the biggest home attendance of the season - 2,458.

Shelton Payne got the Reds off to the perfect start with the opening goal inside six minutes but the visitors hit back through David Bridges in the 36th minute. However, Craig Lindfield put FC United ahead again five minutes later and substitute Greg Daniels fired home the winner with 15 minutes to go.

The result puts the Reds four points clear after Ilkeston drew 1-1 at home with 10 men Grantham - the visitors scored a last minute equaliser from the penalty spot. Ashton United move up to second place with a 3-2 win at Buxton.

United started the game confidently and it looked as though another three points was on the way early as Payne showed great touch turning his man in the box before finishing with finesses to put United a goal up after just six minutes.

Out of nowhere Kings Lynn equalised with what is surely one of the best goals we’ve seen all season after Bridges acrobatically connected with an overhead kick to level the game and get a very appreciative warm round of applause from the home fans because the goal simply was top draw.

Thankfully, United found themselves back in the lead before the interval as Lindfield played a 50 yard one-to-two with Payne. Upon collecting the ball on the left wing, Payne, who looked dangerous all afternoon, gave his man the run around before firing the ball across the box where the on rushing Lindfield gave United the lead once more right before the interval.

The second half performance became a little frustrating. United were struggling attacking into the strong wind and there was always the lingering thought after the midweek draw at Rushall Olympic that the Reds could be pegged back and see another two points slip away.

But, with just 15 minutes left, Daniels put the game beyond doubt as he finished off a superb solo run from fellow substitute Rory Fallon to put the game beyond any doubt and give FC United another vital three points.

Saturday’s results make what was already a hugely significant game against Ilkeston on Tuesday even bigger. FC United know victory would put them eight points clear of the Derbyshire outfit with a game still in hand.

Website man of the match: Shelton Payne - great opening goal, and a key role in the second. Payne looks at home on the left flank and is proving to be dangerous with every attack.
