Match Report

FC United couldn’t find the break through against a defensive Barwell side on Sunday afternoon as our seventh Evo-Stik Premier Division campaign opened with a goalless draw.

Both sides hit the woodwork in a very tight game but, over all, it will be the Reds who feel they deserved the three points.

On a blustery afternoon it was FC who started well, a good move involving Dean Stott and Matty Wolfenden saw Tom Greaves put the ball just wide. Wolfenden was in action shortly after when he flicked the ball just over the bar.

On the quarter hour, the FC goal led a charmed life when Nigel Julian played in Callum Woodward. He shot past Dave Carnell only to see the ball hit the far post, roll along the line and hit the other post before being cleared by Stott.

Despite the scare, the Reds were still in the ascendency. FC had three good chances in quick succession: Dave Birch and Callum Byrne shooting wide and Greg Daniels firing at the home keeper.

Daniels was proving to be the liveliest FC attacking player and a great run along the touchline from him saw his cross met on the stretch by Craig Lindfield but his goalbound shot was blocked.

Shortly before half time, Daniels again came close when he saw his shot tipped onto the crossbar by Liam Castle.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with FC trying to break through the resolute home defence. Daniels broke clear on the right and crossed into the six yard box, Castle clearing the ball with his feet before it reached Wolfenden. Wolfenden saw two shots saved by Castle with Daniels putting a shot wide from a cleared FC corner.

With two minutes left on the clock, substitute Connor Bower had a shot saved by Castle as FC pressed for a winner.

Overall, despite having most of the possession, FC struggled to get much flowing football together but the bright performance of Daniels was certainly a plus point.

Man of the match: Greg Daniels. A very energetic performance from Daniels, having the majority of chances for FC. It is testament to him that the Barwell captain seemed to be permanently glued to his back and was doing his utmost to get under his skin.
