Match Report

FC United picked up the inaugural Chauntry Challenge Cup on Saturday afternoon with a well-deserved 3-0 win at Maidenhead United with three second half goals from Connor Bower, Shaun Connor and Greg Daniels.

The first half saw some good football played by FC but the home side had the better of the chances. On nine minutes, the dangerous Dave Tarpey shot from the edge of the box but saw the ball hit the top of the bar. Tarpey again came close 10 minutes later when he burst into the box and saw his shot hit the outside of the post and go wide.

Shortly after the 20 minute mark, FC did have the ball in the net when a Callum Byrne pass found Craig Linfeld but his header was ruled out for offside.

The chances still came at the other end, Leon Solomon curling a shot just wide and Stefan Brown seeing his shot palmed away by Nick Culkin. Culkin followed this up with a great block from Adrian Clifton. Just before the break, Culkin pulled off his best save when he superbly tipped a Tarpey header over the bar.

Both sides made changes at half time but it was the FC changes that made the biggest difference. The Reds took the lead on 64 minutes when a Liam Brownhill cross was turned in by sub Connor Bower for his third goal in three games. Tom Greaves was also looking lively and he saw a shot into the side netting.

With 13 minutes left on the clock, the lead was extended when a cross from the left from Joe Fox was fired home by Shaun Connor for his first goal since returning to FC. In the last minute, the victory was sealed when a typical driving run into the box by Greg Daniels saw him fire the ball past home keeper Elvijs Putnins, leaving him all shook up.

It was a very bright showing from FC who in the end comprehensively beat the team from the level above though Nick Culkin did deserve his Man of the Match trophy for his first half performance.
