Match Report
A hastily arranged fixture saw the Development Squad travel to Thackley, just north of Bradford for their Lancashire League encounter. A brace each for Ben Seol and David Kuba Kuba along with a strike by Jason Fowles and an own goal saw the reds leave with a 6-1 win.

FC United started at a higher tempo than in previous games, and had earned seven or eight corners in the first twenty minutes without truly threatening the home goal. The best effort saw a Jean Biansumba shot heading for the top corner before being palmed away by the home keeper in the sixteenth minute.

Indeed it took a further ten minutes before the reds took the lead. A defensive clearance was intercepted by Tunde Owolabi who ran forward and had a shot blocked, the rebound fell to Ben Seol who fired home. A second goal followed ten minutes later in a similar fashion with Biansumba returning a Thackley goal kick for Fowles to score. There were no further goals before the break, although FC dominated possession; Owolabi could easily have had a hat-trick.

A half time substitution paid almost instant dividends as Kuba Kuba came on, making it three after less than a minute of the second half. A Scott Cheetham corner was flicked on by Kial Callacher to present a chance that couldn’t be missed.

Owolabi continued to create chances for himself without being able to convert, on 50 minutes a ball through from Fowles saw him clear of the defence and able to take the ball wide of the goalkeeper, but also wide of the post and unable to find the target with a shot and after another Cheetham cross went in off a Thackley defender to make it 4-0, led to him being replaced by Gideon Dosunmu.

FC continued to dominate possession, creating chances without seriously testing the home keeper. So it was by the 70th minute Thackley appeared to be a spent force but kept on trying, forcing a corner in the which was headed in at the near post. This gave the home side fresh impetus.

Kuba Kuba was probably the player who did most to ensure that revival came to nothing, often getting the ball in midfield and driving forward. It was one such run and shot that forced the corner that led to the fifth goal in the 75th minute. He then claimed the finishing touch before a defender, who looked from the bench to have turned into his own net.

Other FC chances came and went, most notably a Scott Cheetham effort being blocked by the keeper before Seol claimed the sixth goal and his second when he too was facing the keeper, his effort was chipped over the keeper and dropped into the net.

Next up is a tie against second placed Brighouse Town at Nicholls on Saturday 8th March, kick off 11am. The Yorkshire outfit are currently five points behind the reds with two games in hand. The two sides have yet to meet this season, the return being at Brighouse on Tuesday 18th March, kick off 7:45pm. Two ties which will almost certainly decide the destination of the Lancashire League Eastern Division Title.

Saturday’s game finishes in plenty of time to make the short hop up the Snake Pass to Stocksbridge, where the 1st team have a 3pm kick off.
