Match Report
FC United Women’s 100% start to the season continued with a 6-2 win over Chorltonians LFC courtesy of a hat-trick from captain Kirsty Chambers, a Jade Parker penalty and strikes from Lizzie Evans and Beth Tattersall in front of nearly 50 FC fans from a crowd of 61.

In stark contrast to the soaking received last time out, FC’s women played in gorgeous autumnal sunshine at the South Manchester Hough End Centre. FC kicked off and rampaged forward in the first minute; Chambers leading a charge down the left lofting a deep cross beyond the far post where Tattersall fired back into the danger area causing a sliced clearance and the game’s first corner.

Keeper, Alice McNorton-Marshall, dealt with the set piece comfortably, launching her team forward on the counter attack through the speedy number 7, Jordana King. Chelsea Patient matched King stride for stride and made an excellent challenge in the area as King looked to strike.

The end-to-end pattern continued throughout the first five minutes and after an FC attack ended in offside, Chorltonians launched another foray deep into FC territory where once again Patient bettered King at the expense of a corner, which United cleared out of play on the opposite side.

In came the resultant long throw and as the Red’s defence challenged inside the area the referee awarded a penalty to the home side for an innocuous push. With regular keeper Mary Priestner failing a fitness test, stand in for the day, left back Gail Pennington was sent the wrong way by an excellent spot kick from King on seven minutes.

Within a minute FC were awarded a penalty of their own as Parker was unceremoniously hacked down after an excellent surge into the area and the midfielder herself nonchalantly stroked the ball into the bottom corner of the goal. The game’s third goal in as many minutes gave FC a 2-1 lead as Chambers began her scoring spree with an excellent lofted shot dipping over the keeper and just under the bar at the far post from the left edge of the area.

Once again Patient and King went head-to-head with another corner being King’s prize for her endeavour. Tattersall cleared the danger charging over halfway down the FC right with the Chorltonian defence snuffing out the attack. The game became scrappy with constant interruptions in play for a period until the 20 minute mark when Lizzie Evans converted a Parker cross after good work down the right between Parker and Kaya Janny.

Nat Callaghan tested Pennington with a dipping half-volley from 20 yards bouncing off the firm ground just in front of FC’s Number 1 who stretched to her full height to claim the ball just under her bar before clearing up field. Parker seized on the loose ball and tricked her way deep into the area from the right; subjected to last ditch challenges from three green and black striped shirted defenders, managed to squeeze a toe ended ball across the goal mouth for the unmarked Tattersall to blast home from three yards on twenty five minutes.

United had several more chances to extend their lead before half time, notably with twenty yard efforts from Janny and a sublime Beth Hayes volley both of which McNorton-Marshall fielded competently. The persistent threat of King looked Chorltonian’s best bet for reducing the deficit and ten minutes before the break the last meaningful chance of the half for either side fell to the pacey number 7 who, under pressure from Fran Davies, was forced into rushing a shot from 15 yards that Pennington collected easily.

The home side kicked off the second half and debutant midfielder Aimee Cooke, on from the restart for Parker, soon had FC back in possession feeding Chambers who fired wide from range. Cooke and Chambers combined well to force the half’s first corner on 50 minutes which pin balled around the home side’s box with Janny and Hayes having efforts blocked by resolute defending.

Janny, becoming increasingly influential as midfield play maker and played a one-two with Amy Battel who marauded forward from full back and crossed for Chambers who took a touch on the left edge of the area before firing over the keeper into the far top corner giving FC an unassailable 5-1 lead on the hour.

However, Chorltonians were in no way giving up and just five minutes later substitute Leona Kaiserova managed to succeed where King had failed; beating both Patient and Davies and firing past Pennington to reduce the deficit.

The four goal cushion was soon restored as Chambers clipped a ball towards Shellby Wolstencroft in the area only for a defender to prevent pass completion with aid of a hand. The eagle eyed referee had no hesitation in awarding the game’s third spot kick which Chambers despatched with aplomb only for the official to award a retake, citing ‘encroachment’. Unfazed the retake was slammed into the bottom corner on 70 minutes and Chambers was celebrating her hat-trick and sixth goal in three games.

Tattersall saw red inside the last five minutes for a second bookable offence, sliding in recklessly to help out her defence on the edge of the area. Pennington dealt well with the resultant free kick and the last chance of the game after a great ball from Davies fell to none other than Chambers who narrowly missed out on her fourth of the afternoon.

Without doubt Chorltonians will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season and this FC victory could prove crucial in the Reds’ bid for promotion. League leaders on goal difference are the division’s other 100 percenters, Middleton Athletic, and they visit Broadhurst next Sunday; get yourselves to that football ground and back the Reds’ bid for outright top spot.

Players of the game: Supporters’ choice: Kirsty Chambers - a hat-trick and constant threat all afternoon. Writer’s choice: Despite Kirsty’s excellent display and superb defensive robustness from Chelsea Patient and Fran Davies, this week’s choice is Kaya Janny who grew into the creative midfield role vacated by Kayleigh Catterall from last season and was influential throughout.
