Nick Swirad moves on to Rossendale United

Nick Swirad has been released by FC United, so that he can sign for Rossendale United, who play in the Unibond Division 1 North.

Nick was a graduate from our youth team set up and is familiar to many, because he’s always been a regular on the terraces too. Manager, Karl Marginson, said "Nick did a fantastic job for us when he was drafted into the first team before Christmas. We know we’ll probably need cover in defence again soon, but it isn’t good for young players to sit around not getting regular games, so we’ve agreed to let him go to Rossendale. They play only one division below us and we have a good relationship with Rossendale, so it will be great experience for Nick."

Friendly v Wigan Robin Park, Tuesday 27 July 2010

We’ve accepted an invitation to play Wigan Robin Park in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday 27 July 2010 at their home ground, Robin Park Arena.

Many FC United fans will be aware of this team, which began life in the same year as our club. They have close links with the originators of the respected Wigan fanzine, The Mudhutter, who have been occasional guests at Course You Can Malcolm. Wigan Robin Park is a fully members-owned club in which all their players, fans and committee pay a weekly membership fee.

Wigan Robin Park FC was founded in 2005 and started life in the Manchester Football League. They quickly rose to the Manchester Premier Division and then the North West Counties First Division, which is the equivalent to where FC United started, but it was called Division Two in our day. Last season, their inaugural season in the NWCFL, Wigan Robin Park finished a respectable 5th and along the way became the first team to defeat title contenders AFC Liverpool at Valerie Park, in front of 603, their highest home crowd. Maybe we can show Wigan Robin Park an even bigger crowd when we visit in July?

Further details of the game will be announced nearer the time.

Rampant Reds demolish Dabbers

Kyle Wilson hit a hat-trick as FC United thrashed Nantwich Town 6-1 at the Weaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,171 supporters.

Ben Deegan, Simon Carden and Jerome Wright got the other goals as the rampant Reds demolished the Dabbers in the thick Cheshire fog.

United controlled the game from the off and went one ahead after just five minutes through on-loan striker Wilson. Lennon grabbed an equaliser five minutes later but then the Reds stepped up a gear with Wilson and Carden both getting on the scoresheet to make it 3-1 at half-time.

Deegan added a fourth two minutes after the restart to put the game beyond doubt but then it was another 25 minutes before Wilson set up Wright for the fifth. The Macclesfield forward completed his hat-trick and the rout 11 minutes before the end.

In recognition of the 52nd anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, former Busby Babe Ronnie Cope was the special guest at the Weaver Stadium. Cope made his first team debut for United in 1956 and began playing regularly at centre-back for the first team following the tragedy in Munich.

Cope also played alongside Duncan Edwards in the 23-0 demolition of Nantwich Town in the FA Youth Cup’s inaugural season in 1952/53. In the twilight of his career, Cope played for Nantwich Town. All players wore black armbands in commemoration of those who lost their lives as a result of tragedy.

The opening minutes of the game saw FC looking to threaten the Nantwich defence at every opportunity and United could have scored less than five minutes in when Deegan rose in the six-yard box to head a Phil Marsh cross onto the bar.

Early pressure paid off for the Reds as Wilson scored for the first time since his return to the club. A well placed ball from Adam Tong was played forward to Wilson who beat his man and fired his initial shot under the onrushing keeper. Wilson then rounded Jones and had little to do but slide the ball over the line.

Despite continued pressure from United, it was the Dabbers who were next on the score sheet as the long serving Lennon produced an equaliser ten minutes in. A Nantwich free kick was picked up by Lennon who turned and shot across Sam Ashton into the far bottom corner.

Halfway through the first period, Wilson put the Reds ahead once more. Wright’s cross from the left into Deegan fell to Wilson on the edge of the area who had time to set up his powerful drive past the keeper and into the back of the net.

Looking to increase the lead, United continued to push forward, with good spells of one touch passing and attacking play to pressure the home side’s defence. Deegan also almost profited from a weak Nantwich back pass, as the centre forward went one-on-one with Jones, who pulled off a fine one-handed save to deny FC.

Persistence and hard work in the midfield saw Jake Cotterell able to close down the Nantwich defence and push the ball through to Wilson whose storming shot on target from 25 yards out was denied only by an excellent tip-over from Jones.

FC United wrapped up an impressive first half performance with a third goal, this time coming from Simon Carden. Wright’s corner from the left fell to Wilson on the edge of the 18 yard box, who hit his shot on goal low and hard through the crowded area. Jones did well to get down to his left to parry the initial shot; however Carden was on hand at the post to blast the ball into the roof of the net.

As the second half of the game got underway, the heavy fog continued to shroud the Weaver Stadium. However, the weather conditions weren’t enough to stop the on-target Reds who increased the goal margin once again.

Deegan topped off an industrious performance with a goal two minutes into the half. The striker beat the keeper to a poor back pass from Ross Davidson and as Jones went down, Deegan was first to react and picked up the loose ball to fire into the net, past two defenders on the line.

United also held firm at the back, with Tong clearing a corner off the line, and minutes later Ludovic Quistin ending Lennon’s attacking run into the box with a strong defensive tackle.

Marsh’s cross into the six-yard box was picked up by the unmarked Deegan who saw his header on goal denied by another good save from Jones. The Dabbers’ keeper was arguably the one who prevented FC from scoring a handful more goals.

With less than 20 minutes of the game remaining and the fog showing no signs of easing off, United’s left back, Quistin, was dismissed following a second yellow card. As the ball was played through the fog, Quistin jumped for a defensive header and the ball was deemed to have touched his arm. As a result Cotterell moved to left back for the remainder of the game.

A minute later, FC showed no signs of being a man down, going forward and firing a fifth past the Dabbers. Wilson latched onto a decent ball from Carden and a clever pass inside to Wright saw the winger run forward one-on-one with Jones and slot the ball past the keeper to top off a well-worked move.

On 79 minutes, Wilson wrapped up an impressive performance, achieving his hat-trick and notching United’s sixth of the afternoon. The ball was well won by Kyle Jacobs who played the ball over the top to Wilson on the edge of the 18 yard box. Wilson hit the ball first time on his left foot and fired it low and hard off the post into the bottom right hand corner.

Having more than sealed his return to FC, Wilson was replaced by Joseph Yoffe. The Reds continued to go forward until the final whistle and the last action of the game came when a speculative effort by Yoffe saw the keeper make yet another good stop down to his right.

Roca races for fitness as Reds eye midtable

Carlos Roca faces a late fitness test as FC United go into Saturday’s match against familiar foes Nantwich Town knowing that a win could see the Reds leapfrog their opponents into mid-table respectability.

United are unbeaten in 2010 with two draws and a victory giving them a solid base to go forward with. They are two points behind the Dabbers but also have a game in hand. Depending on how Buxton, Burscough and Marine get on this weekend, the Reds could replace Saturday’s opponents in 11th place – a position which Karl Marginson’s side held for much of last season.

United expect to have a virtually full complement of players to choose from. Roca will travel with the squad to the Weaver Stadium and be given the chance to prove he has overcome his hamstring strain, Adriano Rigoglioso can play before serving his three match ban whilst Adam Tong has one month length before emigrating to Australia. Danny Warrender is the only long term absentee.

Assistant manager Roy Soule said: “Carlos felt a little twinge last Saturday at Durham so we decided to take him off. It was only a little twinge though so we’ll give him a fitness test on Saturday.

“Danny (Warrender) is still having problems with his hip and he’s got a few personal problems to resolve. Once they are settled we look forward to welcoming him back into the fold. Tongy has assured me personally that he wants to carry on playing right up until he leaves, he wants to go out on a high – all guns blazing, so that’s good enough for Karl and me.”

Saturday’s fixture will be the 10th competitive match between the two sides, honours are currently even with three wins each and three draws, although Nantwich’s 5-1 in the President’s Cup two years ago, which is included in that statistic, was overturned due to the Dabbers fielding an eligible player.

This season, a Phil Marsh hat-trick and one from Jamie Mack saw United demolish Nantwich 4-0 in October at Hyde United’s Ewen Fields. The Reds will be hoping for more of the same but Soule knows that Nantwich are a tricky team to beat, especially at home.

He said: “They are a good footballing side with a bit of resilience, I like to think we’re like that too. Hopefully the form we showed against them at Hyde can be replicated on Saturday and we’ll pick up all three points.”

Nantwich Town versus FC United of Manchester is this Saturday with kick-off at three o’clock and it’s pay on the gate. Get yourself to that football ground.

Green and Gold Campaign

FC United offers its support to the Green & Gold Campaign aimed at unifying United supporters. The campaign, organised by no one group nor owned by any one section of support, has grown over the last two weeks as awareness of the true implications of the takeover of Manchester United has escalated.

The wearing of Green & Gold attire is intended to provide a public, tangible demonstration of the depth of feeling and provides a direct link to our, commonly shared, Newton Heath roots and has undoubtedly caught a mood.

Many have argued that the only realistic method of protest is one of full and total boycott. For those that made that painful sacrifice in 2005 and received criticism for doing so, it is an understandable reaction. However we did not seek the moral high ground five years ago, and we should not aim to occupy it now. Whether to boycott or not has always been down to individual choice and continues to be exactly that, however IMUSA were correct this week to state that the only real solution is to starve the Glazers of cash.

FC United is a proud bulwark against the travesty of the takeover, but we do not exist as a virtuous island. Our priorities are to continue to build our football club as an example of how we believe all clubs should be constituted; our short term aim is to establish our own stadium, in the longer term we will continue to campaign for wider supporter-ownership across football as we firmly believe that the only sustainable model of ownership is just that. We intend to place FC United at the very centre of that debate.

If we are going to affect significant long term change in the game then it is more important than ever that we maintain our own course to show that there is an alternative model to the instability of clubs which do not involve supporters at their heart. We must continue to help build a broad alliance of fans and interested parties in the wider game and we should encourage those better placed than us to tackle the issues at Old Trafford by giving them our support.

FC United remains as an alternative for fans seeking refuge from the excesses of the Premier League and we continue to be a major part of the visible resistance to the Glazers and the general mismanagement of football. Without the reforms we have campaigned for there will be no long term sustainable solution.

Everyone at FC United remains committed to what we set out to do especially now as we move closer to our own stadium. Our business plan for the stadium has been submitted to the city council and we expect to have a meeting with them in the next few weeks to discuss the next stage.

As we stated in our founding manifesto we will continue to ‘address the concerns which many Manchester United fans have had over the last decade or more with how the club and football have developed, culminating in the club’s takeover by Malcolm Glazer’.

FC United stands as a proud alternative for those disenfranchised supporters

The 2005 manifesto also stated ‘we have ambitious and long term plans’ and we remain resolute in our determination to deliver them.
We want FCUM Radio to be a voice for FC United of Manchester, but also to carry high quality radio content with interaction from all fans and club officials. In addition to the marvellous match day commentary crew of Swampy, Keg and co, FCUM Radio now has volunteers producing music programmes covering blues, folk, indie, electronica, garage, psychedlia, rock n roll, fusion and jazz. We run a 24 hour schedule which is updated every Sunday.

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers who are interested in producing their own radio show to add to our team. We can provide full training and all you need is a computer and an internet connection. To email us in the week contact station@fcumradio.co.uk
